New Bionic Hands

There are about 3600 amputations every year in Italy and 2500 are hand amputations. The INAIL Prostheses Centre in Budrio is working to make last-generation bionic hands available as part of basic assistance over the next 4-5 years.

At present, basic assistance includes bionic hands powered by extracorporeal energy, while these “new prostheses represent a significant step forward as they allow for touch and other sensations,” explains the Rinaldo Sacchetti, Director of the INAIL Prostheses Centre in Budrio, at the Scientific Congress on Bionic Hands that was held on February 21 at the Accademia dei Lincei. Can we control “ghost limbs” with artificial intelligence? In this interview with Francesca Meini, Emanuele Gruppioni, Director of the Research Area (Technical and Health) at the INAIL Prostheses Centre in Budrio, explains how bionic hands are made and how they will be integrated into and controlled by the human body.
