The 5thhackathon of the Coding Girls Educational Tour ended today at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Salerno. The event is part of a programme promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Embassy in Italy in collaboration with Microsoft, that aims to increase the number of women in STEAM.

Nearly 200 young women studying at IIS Marconi in Nocera Inferiore, IIS Sensale in Nocera Inferiore, LSS Severi in Salerno, IIS Giovanni XXIII in Salerno, IIS Publio Virgilio Marone in Mercato San Severino and IIS Da Procida in Salerno participated in the computer challenge with enthusiasm and creativity.

Participants were welcomed by Pepper, a human looking robot that wished all the young women the best of luck. Following an introduction and messages of encouragement by Filomena Ferrucci, Professor of Computer Science and President of the Computer Science Didactic Council, University of Salerno; Delfina Malandrino, Researcher, Department of Computer Science, University of Salerno; Maria Rosaria Pelizzari, Associate Professor of Humanities and Rector’s Delegate for Equal Opportunities, University of Salerno.

The students also received the encouragement of a special guest, Marica Rinaldi, Communications Designer & Creative Director, who emphasized the importance of the beauty of communications in a very fun way and pointed out how it should be both pleasing and functional. And on the basis of this reflection, American Supercoach Emily Thomforde Code Educator and Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics (STEAM) Specialist, launched the theme of the challenge: beauty.

The women worked for hours, programming, conceiving and developing dozens of projects with the help of Marica Rinaldi, the coaches from the Fondazione Mondo Digitale (Giorgia Di Tommaso, Marco Brocchieri, Lara Forgione) and students from the University of Salerno (Maria Angela Pellegrino, Alessia Antelmi, Gemma Catolino, Marianna DI Gregorio, Lucia Cimmino, Domenico Antonio Tropeano, Umberto Picariello).

An emotional explosion that peaked during the awards ceremony, when Filomena Ferrucci, Delfina Malandrino and Marica Rinaldi presented gadgets offered by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the University of Salerno to the winners.
