I Love Working with Communities

Teresa, 24, on the digital civil service

For various weeks, eight volunteers of the digital civil service have begun collaborating with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, as a reception structure, and the Italian Association of Philanthropic Foundations and Agencies (Assifero), as coordinating organism.

During the course of the year, the young volunteers will work on education and digital facilitation at the Rome Città Educativa. Activities include tutoring, local coordination, organisational management, communications, and awareness-raising for initiatives and services. It’s a stimulating and significant experience with a positive impact on all of our initiatives. It also is a unique opportunity for professional and personal growth both for the volunteers and the staff at theFondazione Mondo Digitale. In particular, the volunteers are supervised by Cecilia Stajano, Community Coordinator for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, and Ilaria Graziano, Project Manager, as local project operators.

In order to introduce you to their stories and aspirations, once a week, we are publishing an interview with one of the operators in which they can share the experience and motivation that drove them to join adventure, as well as their hopes for the future. The interviews are conducted by Onelia Onorati.

Today, we introduce you to Teresa D’Onofrio, 24, who has a degree in Communications from the University of  Salerno and is currently studying Political Sciences, Sociology, and Communications at Sapienza University of Rome.

What made you decide to become a digital civil service volunteer and what do you expect?

For some time, I have had the idea of working on a civil service project, but I couldn't find one that suited me. After graduating in October 2023, I chose to dedicate a year to my growth, not only personally but also professionally. The decision to become a volunteer was further motivated by the harmony I have with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale Project, which is in line with my studies. For this reason, I expect that this course will allow me to put the technical skills acquired during my university career into practice, as well as to develop new ones and, above all, to grow both professionally and personally by creating new connections.

What are you enjoying the most about collaborating with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale?

I appreciate the "informal" and dynamic environment, and the competence of all the members. I find it stimulating to be involved in projects addressing different recipients and with various local dimensions, but transversal objectives such as digitalisation and digital education.

In your opinion, what impact can FMD have on individuals?

Thanks to the many active projects, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale manages to generate a significant impact both at the local and national levels. Despite its interaction with major, it remains in close contact with people, including the elderly, children, and SMEs, ensuring the creation of projects suited to different needs.

What do you think your contribution will be?

Being new to the FMD team, I think I can bring fresh ideas and new perspectives. With my recent degree, I will try to contribute with a simple and creative approach. I will try to help make the work more innovative, bringing a fresh touch to the team.

What skills and knowledge will field in this adventure with FMD? What skills do you expect to develop through this digital volunteering experience?

Working in communications and focusing on event planning, I mainly intend to apply organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as more technical skills in project design and implementation. I hope to acquire practical skills related to Third Sector, transforming the "theory" developed during my master's degree into action.

What do you want to do when you “grow up”?

Currently, my interest is to continue working in the third sector. I am passionate about the possibility of collaborating directly with communities, helping to plan and implement initiatives with a tangible impact in the local area.
