In January 2003, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale began work in the field of digital inclusion for the elderly with a pilot course involving 3 schools and 3 elderly centres in Rome.
In September 2003, financing by Microsoft allowed the project to be extended to all the 19 districts of the city. In 2004 and 2005, the FMD implemented the programme with its own resources. A key element for this project is the existence, in Rome, of many centres for the elderly. The data for 2005 reveals the presence of 135 elderly centres serving over 87,380 senior citizens (see table).
This concentration has simplified the work of the Foundation in twinning schools and elderly centres and implementing an inter-generational programme in which students, with the supervision of teachers, become e-inclusion tutors for the elderly.
