Delappe: an Art Activist

Thanks to our collaboration with the American Embassy in Italy, world renowned media artist and art activist Joseph DeLappe will be in Rome to participate in the Media Art Festival (April 27-29) with a workshop, lectures and one of his most famous works: the Gold Gandhi.

The Rome Maxxi will host the “Gold Gandhi” avatar, a 3D reproduction laminated in 24 carat gold and a video of Gandhi’s Salt March, a work by Delappe produced in 2008. For the performance, the artist walked the 240 miles of the original route on a jogging machine and on-line on Second Life. It was from that moment that DeLappe began defining himself as an activist, besides an artist.

Joseph DeLappe will also meet with students throughout the festival. He will present his work on April 27 at the “Spazio D” of the MAXXI Museum during the workshop entitled “A Meeting with Joseph DeLappe,” a visual lecture on his works on the edge of art, technology and social activism.

On April 28, at the Rome Accademia delle Belle Arti, the artist and professor at the University of Nevada Digital Media Studio will participate in the round table on “Can Media Art Save Us? Human Sustainability as a 21st Century Challenge.“ Moreover, he will meet with students at RUFA - Rome University of Fine Arts at the RUFA Space – Pastificio Cerere for a lecture on “Project 929: Mapping the Solar,” a protest performance to identify the size of a solar plant necessary to provide energy for the entire United States.
