GJC: A Celebration of School

The Global Junior Challenge, which returns with its 8th edition, is an international competition that rewards the most innovative projects that employ new technology for the education and training of youth. Developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, it is the final event of a series of activities promoting the strategic role of technology for the future of school and young men and women.

The event is dedicated to Linguist Tullio De Mauro, who guided the Fondazione Mondo Digitale as President for over ten years.

For the first time, the 8th edition of the GJC, the final event of international competition, will be organised as a multi-event focused on three Italian cities: Milan, Naples and Rome.

GLOBAL JUNIOR CHALLENGE

A CELEBRATION OF INNOVATIVE AND INCLUSIVE SCHOOLS

On October 25-27, Rome will host the Global Junior Challenge, the international competition that rewards the creative use of technology to bring innovation to school. During the opening conference, prominent personalities of Italian culture will honour the memory and commitment of Tullio De Mauro, to whom the event is now dedicated. The showcase area will host over 90 projects from around the world, revealing a new way of imagining and organising schooling. Project Make: Learn: Share: Europe will allow 5 student delegations from 4 countries to meet in Rome for an international hackathon on digital innovation in Europe. The GJC has received a Medal of Merit from the President of the Italian Republic.

Alfonso teaches Mathematics and involves his students in Robotics Labs in Hospitals and Health Centres. Stella has opened a Fab Lab at her School, while Chiara (16) is one of the members of the team of Italian Digital Ambassadors. And they are just a few of the protagonists of the Global Junior Challenge, the international competition, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, that rewards the creative and innovative use of technology for education and the future of youth. From October 25-27, Rome will host over 90 projects from 16 countries that describe the inclusive didactic experiences that bring out talent and leave no one behind: multimedia museum guides for sight-impaired individuals to technological devices conceived to allow disabled students to participate in gym activities.

Quality in school means that schools are welcoming. This was a great maxim of Prof. Tullio De Mauro, who for over ten years guided the Fondazione Mondo Digitale as its President. Starting from this edition, the Global Junior Challenge is dedicated to his memory. The opening conference, which will be held on October 25 (10:00 am) at the Biblioteche di Roma, renowned Italian cultural personalities, from Luca Serianni to Giuseppe Laterza, will meet to honour and promote the work and philosophy of the celebrated linguist. The Lego Serious Play will allow teachers, students and school administrators to debate and design the school of the future.

The final event of the Global Junior Challenge coincides with the working conference of Project Make: Learn: Share: Europe, promoted as part of the European Erasmus+ Programme, in collaboration with the City of Rome, Municipality of Sheffield (United Kingdom), Municipality of Riga (Latvia), Municipality of Gijón (Spain) and the Knut Hahn School Institute (Sweden). Five delegations of young Digital Ambassadors, aged 14-19, will meet in Rome for an international hackathon (October 26) on innovation and digital inclusion in Europe.

On October 27 (10:00 am), the Rome Campidoglio will host the Awards Ceremony with the Tullio De Mauro Special Award that will be presented to the most innovative professor by Silvana Ferreri De Mauro.

The Global Junior Challenge is an initiative promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale with the patronage of Roma Capitale, co-financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ Programme, in collaboration with the Rome Library system, the Rome Civic Zoology Museum and Città della Scienza. For the first time, the 8th edition of the GJC, will be held as a multi-event with showcase areas, debates and lab salso at the Microsoft House in Milan and at the Città della Scienza in Naples, as part of the 3-day Smart Education & Technology Days.
