The Istituto Comprensivo Giovanni XXIII, directed by Barbara Mineo, is one of the educational hubs of the Social Hosting Hub project network. We are in the small town of Paceco, in the Province of Trapani, which has just over 10,000 residents. The area is known for some of its products of excellence, especially slow food (Nubia red garlic, yellow melon and sea salt). The school “represents the main educational agency for the area and social system.”

“The current economic crisis has further impoverished work opportunities in a context that was already largely compromised. Thus, School PTOF states that “the increase in the unemployment rate has compromised the possibility that families may participate in opportunities for cultural, educational and personal growth and generated the emergence of micro-criminality and adolescent deviance.”

Participation in Project Social Hosting Hub is an important challenge for the school to increase its educational resources and strategies, without overlooking students with special needs who total 11% of the school population.

Massimiliano Scopelliti is one of the 100 teachers at the school who have followed a course on non-hostile communication. “Educator Federica Boniolo was truly encyclopaedic. It was a pleasure listening to her. She addressed useful, interesting and new content. I am sure that our students will react positively and proactively to the activities organised by Social Hosting Hub. I have already experienced how interesting these issues are to youth. They know more about them than us teachers! However, they still require an education and a guide to use all the tools available in the best manner.”

Project Social Hosting Hub is one of the winners of the Google.org Impact Challenge on Security, a fund that helps non-profit organisations developing practical and real solutions to contrast hate and extremism, and to help children be safe on- and off-line. The objective of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and partner organisations Action AidComunità di Sant'Egidio and Parole O_Stili, is to create and coordinate the first phyrtual (physical and virtual) ecosystem made of connections, relations and communities.
