Coding Suburbs

Educational activities begin this week at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym under construction in the suburbs of Reggio Calabria (Modena Area) at the Istituto Comprensivo Bernardino Telesio, the school directed by Marisa Maisano. Reggio Calabria (along with Milan, Bari and Palermo) is one of the four cities involved by Project OpenSpace, selected by Con i Bambini as part of the Fund to Contrast the Educational Poverty of Minors.

The Telesio School is located in the city suburbs in an area that presents a variety of issues that “hinder its development and block entrepreneurial activities related to commerce, agriculture and services, thereby not exploiting local resources that are often taken over by illegal activities.” The number of non-European families are on the rise, as are problematic social issues. There also is one of the city’s largest Rome camps. The percentage of young men and women at risk of deviance and becoming school dropouts is very high [ Three-year Educational Plan].

The school has agreed to begin with Coding activities that will involve students and teachers, also from its various satellite schools. The educational sessions will be held by Fondazione Mondo Digitale Coach Lara Forgione, who will introduce participants to Scratch to create animations (costumes, backgrounds, dialogues and sounds).
