The Coding Girls Educational Tour, promoted by Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Embassy in Italy in collaboration with Microsoft, moves to Rome, where i twill work with 250 young women from 10 schools in the Metropolitan Area of Rome.

Overcoming gender stereotypes, interesting women in coding, allowing young women to experiment with new technology hands-on … these are just a few of the challenges of the Coding Girls National Tour, promoted by Fondazione Mondo Digitale and the United States Embassy in Italy in collaboration with Microsoft.

The young women in Naples, who participated in yesterday’s hackathon, ideally pass the baton on to their peers in ten schools in Rome and its province for a series of intensive training sessions coordinated by American Coach Emily Thomforde, Code Educator and Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics (STEAM) Specialist, to interest young women in scientific subjects and fight the gender gap.

Starting in October, 10 high schools in Lazio have held coding session for 250 young women, who are now ready for the Roman leg of the tour, which will be held on November 8-9.

The coding marathon will be held tomorrow at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, where the students will be inspired by Algebra Professor Elisabetta Strickla and founding partners of the Inter-University Observatory on Gender Studies.

After Rome, the tour, which began in Naples, will move to Catania (Nov. 13-14) and Milan (Nov. 16-17), but the challenges will continue. All participating schools will found a Coding Girls Club in which young women can become mentors and organise coding and creativity sessions for their peers.
