June 20 is an important day. It reminds everyone about human rights. It celebrates the courage and perseverance of the many refugees. During the health emergency, we can’t hold the traditional “Io ci sono” football match, but we can accept the UNHCR invitation and share our stories.

We decided to relive last year’s fabulous day in Reggio Calabria: sports, smiles and friendship [see news: #Iocisono in 5 Cities]. Our local coordinator, Giulia Melissari, reached out to some of the protagonists of that game for solidarity: Moussa, Jaspreet and Keita.

"Kids from around the world, institutions, schools and local associations all came together to remember the importance of human rights and solidarity. Helping each other out is always the best choice. And this is the beauty of sports: a game can change the world, inspire and unite people.”

Hi! My name is Moussa. I’m from Senegal, but I live in Reggio Calabria. Last year, I participated with friends in the football game organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale for World Refugee Day. It was fun! I actually didn’t play but coached one of the two teams and it was fun to see all these young kids from around the world. The day was full of significance. It reminded us about all our brothers, who couldn’t be there with us, who are dying day after day to find refuge and live in peace, fleeing from war. I hope that next year we can all be together again! This year, it’s not possible, but last year’s memory binds us together. Thanks to the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, I am there!

Hi! My name is Jaspreet and I come from India. I am a referee and an operator at the Reggio Calabria CSI. Sport was fundamental for my integration here. Last year, I refereed the football match for World Refugee Day. It was a delightful afternoon and I am very sorry that we could not hold the event this year! I met many new friends that I still meet up with for other games. Can’t wait to all meet up again next year!
