Music Creates Images

An original orchestra is taking shape in Class 5D at the Istituto comprensivo Tullia Zevi in Rome: the children are using everyday objects to create sounds and represent the natural landscapes they have invented.

If sound represents images, many sounds represent a story. This is the project that the students are working on with Artist Paolo Gatti. They started by drawing woods, rivers, picnics, stories and then began to add music to their creations with original musical instruments. A xylophone can represent rain, an aluminium sheet produces the sound of thunder and bottles of water can be made to sound like a flowing river.

Paolo Gatti’s lab at IC Tullia Zevi is part of the initiatives organised by Project European Light Expression Network to promote art education, develop new audiences and create synergies amongst artists, schools, students, local institutions and enterprises operating in the cultural and artistic sectors. This shared work will be exhibited at the Rome Maxxi during the Media Art Festival (April 27-29).
