Robot Designer

Product Design students at the Istituto europeo di design return to the showcase area at RomeCup (March 16-18) to present two prototypes entirely developed by them: Agrobox (an automatic greenhouse) and Space Turtle (a smart toy).

Marika Aakesson, Coordinator of the Product Design Programme, explains why the school has invested so much in robotics over the past six years.

Agrobox is an automatic greenhouse that can grow delicate plant species without any human intervention thanks to a range of sensors that control the greenhouse environment. The parameters required by each plant species can be uploaded from an on-line library via smartphone.

The app provides users with all the cultivation data via a cloud server and alerts the user if a plant or flower is ready to be picked, as well as any necessary maintenance actions.

Space Turtle is a toy for young children, a robot shaped as a turtle that can be controlled via a smartphone app. Children can play with the Space Turtle both live and with other children via an Android app that is hosted on a local network for greater security.

The project is straightforward and the app can be adapted to real inputs or to control the toy via the development of the game on the app. The robot can also be used autonomously and it interacts with the environment, recognizing obstacles and avoiding them.
