Smart Mail Box

A group of students from IIS Galileo Ferraris in Catania and their Prof. Carmelo Marino are working on an ambitious project: improving the quality of the universal postal system.

“We want to develop an electronic device to install in post boxes that will warn people via SMS when “old-style” mail arrives,” explains the professor. “The device is extremely useful when we are not at home or at work, but also for all those people who have walking problems and that may not be warned by the postman when mail arrives.”

Carmelo Marino, who has a degree in ICT, has been teaching for over 15 years at IIS Galileo Ferraris in Catania. He loves sports just like he loves didactic challenges and loves to involve kids in innovative and exciting activities.

The school, which is directed by Headmaster Lucio Pricoco, is participating in Project Meet No Neet, part of the global Microsoft YouthSpark Programme.

Project “Meet No Neet,” which is currently in its third edition, provides young men and women with technological, social and entrepreneurial training for life in the 21st century. In particular, the students find support for the development of their ideas and projects and help for entering the working world. The main project phases include:

  • Experiential training (even via coding, project management, etc. activities)
  • Development and Crowdfunding
  • Discovery Talent Contest, Hackathon & Fair

Students have entered Project “Mail to Email in the Discovery Talent Contest,” which rewards the most efficient projects and allows them to start a crowdfunding campaign on Phyrtual.org
