Equilibrium and Time

What can you learn in a fab lab? What didactic activities can be provided? How do learning processes improve? Makers and teachers will work on the school of the future, starting with activities that can be organized in a fab lab. This unusual challenge inaugurated European Maker Week (May 30 - June 5, 2016).

The pilot experience, organized by the Fab Lab at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym, enthused all the participants, indicating new opportunities for collaboration.

"We created four groups: two of teachers and two of makers. Each teacher group chose an issue and challenged a maker team to develop a didactic activity,” explains Mauro Del Santo, Fab Lab Coordinator.

"The first teacher team decided to address the issue of time, developing an open exercise based on the use of three wooden groups that children could use to tell stories or describe happenings. Each cube exposes the issue of time differently: time is a line, time is not a line, and history is not a line.  The makers developed a touch console controlling sounds and lights. They were not able to complete it, but with another half-day it would have been up and working.”

"The second group of teachers chose to work on the issue of equilibrium.  Students had to choose objects and balance them on base. Based on the composition, the students then had to tell a story. The makers answered by creating a series of models to describe different types of equilibrium: static, balanced, kinetic … and spiritual. Unfortunately, the time was not enough to complete the challenge, but the exchange was extremely proficient,” explains Mauro Del Santo.

And now both teachers and makers impatiently await a new challenge at the Fab Lab …
