Beyond School

From March to May, twelve over-sixties followed by twelve tutors learned about new technology at the IT Lab of the Rome IIS Lombardo Radice thanks to Project "Grandparents on the Internet". The classroom activities were coordinated by Prof Gabriella Cecchetti, who points out the great interest of the elders in the initiative and their desire to continue the programme. Over the course of three months the elders learned to book on-line (trains, hotels) and use a variety of communication tools, including e-mail and Skype.

This experience was fundamental as the school is located in Rome’s “Municipio 7,” the district with the highest number of elders: 70,000 over-sixty-fives.

The choice of the school to run intergenerational solidarity programme is a concrete answer to community issues – including a majority of low-income elders, who risk social and digital exclusion (Roma Capitale, Annuario statistico 2015).

The school, administered by Headmaster Flora Beggiato, is very involved in the community and aware that it acts as a reference point for a very large basing which includes five urban areas..

“Intergenerational solidarity” is one of the transversal action lines for the Rome Citta Educative Project ("La Città Educativa di Roma Capitale... capitale di Roma - Educazione per la vita") financed by the City of Rome.
