To mark National Urban Suburbs Day, Con i Bambini launches the animated advert for ‘Let’s Organise Hope’
Suburbs are not merely places to be described in terms of hardship, isolation or deprivation. They are also spaces for relationships, creativity, participation and educational partnerships. To mark the National Day of Urban Suburbs, celebrated on 24 June, Con i Bambini has launched an animated advert online, created as part of the Organizziamo la speranza initiative, promoted by the Fund to Combat Child Educational Poverty.
The advert, created in collaboration with the Scuola Italiana di Comix and the writer and author Claudio Morici, uses the language of comics to challenge the clichés that often accompany stories about the suburbs. Images and words invite us to view these areas from a different perspective: that of young people, of educational communities and of the opportunities that take shape in these neighbourhoods every day.
The choice of animation is not merely communicative, but educational. Comics are a language that resonates with younger generations, capable of combining immediacy, creativity and narrative depth. This makes them an effective tool for discussing complex contexts without oversimplifying them, recognising both vulnerabilities and resources, needs and desires, challenges and possibilities.
The campaign forms part of the Organising Hope: An Initiative for Change in Strategic Socio-Educational Areas, which involves 15 cities, over 40 outlying neighbourhoods and 367 third-sector organisations. At its heart is the building of a broad educational alliance between schools, families, third sector organisations, institutions, universities, parishes, associations, children and young people, to combat educational poverty and strengthen the right to grow, learn and participate.
The Fondazione Mondo Digitale is also supporting the dissemination of the advert, sharing the aim of promoting a narrative of the suburbs that is closer to reality: not merely vulnerable areas, but vibrant communities, brimming with skills, civic energy and a future.
