Elders are Important

Today is the International Day of Older Persons, while tomorrow is National Grandparents Day. These are two particularly important dates for Italy, one of the countries with the eldest population in Europe. Indeed, 22.8% of the Italian population is over 65 against an EU average of 20.3%.

According to recent data published by Eurostat for 2019, in Italy, 13.78 million individuals are over 65 years old, and of these, over half (7 million) is over 75. One of the regions with the eldest population in Europe is Liguria, where over-65s represent 28.5% of the population. Compared to 2010, over-65s have increased by 1.8 million units, while under-15s are 400,000 less with an overall population increase of 1.2 million.

We would also like to extend our best wishes to all the grandparents who have participated in our digital literacy programmes for senior citizens. And to all their grandchildren – real and virtual – who accepted the challenge to act as tutors and become knowledge volunteers.
