"Girls, STEM Needs U!"

Today, Irene Cannistraci, Coach for the Coding Girls Programme, will be the protagonist of a role modelling session for Project STEM#4TeenGirls, funded by the Erasmus+ Programme. From 11:30 to 12:00, together with students from the Petranova Secondary School she will meet young women in Prague and Bilbao to discuss the importance of the STEM approach.

Irene was invited to share a presentation entitled "Girls, STEM Needs U!" by partner Scuole Cefa. Irene will describe her educational and professional career (in English) to girls aged 11-18 to stimulate their curiosity towards STEM subjects, overcoming stereotypes and prejudice that condition the new generations.

Project STEM#4TeenGirls allows the CEFA School in Roma, Základní škola a mateřská škola Parentes in Prague and the Arangoya Educational Centre to dedicate a two-year period to mobility (both virtual and physical) and re-evaluate and ramp up the study of technical-scientific subjects amongst young teenagers, overcoming the gender stereotypes that characterise STEM subjects and promoting gender equality.

In a phone conversation with Cecilia Stajano, School Innovation Coordinator and Community Manager at the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the Deputy Director General for CEFA Schools Caterina Contenti explains the fundamental moments of every lesson: emotionally involve students, explain, assign and satisfaction.

Irene

Irene is a twenty-six-year-old PhD student at the Computer Science Department of Rome’s Sapienza University. Her passion for computers started in high school and her professor advised her to study computer science at university. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree at Sapienza University, she decided to work in Software Developer Engineering at a consulting agency. However, notwithstanding the experience she accrued, she still felt her background was incomplete, so she decided to return to university to study machine learning. Notwithstanding various issues, she completed her programme proficiently and even won a scholarship for a PhD at Sapienza University. What she most likes about computer science is that it allows you to dream with your eyes open. All you need to do is think about a passion or cause that you feel strongly about, and you can contribute to it with computer science. In particular, Irene conducts research on machine learning and has recently begun to study the development of natural language. Her research focuses on temporal series in medicine and finance.
