Knowledge and Creativity

Over 800 students have been involved in the RealD Educational Campaign, an educational campaign for schools promoted by RealD with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale to introduce students to 3D technology. Students participated in laboratories developing their own 3D creative projects, which reveal a great interest in social and ethic issues.

Divulging knowledge and stimulating creativity are the objectives of the RealD Educational Campaign, an initiative to introduce students in Milan, Rome and Naples to 3D technology.

Promoted by RealD, a global leader in 3D systems for cinema, in collaboration with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, which promotes knowledge, innovation and social inclusion, the campaign has involved over 800 Italian students between March and April 2016. The students had the opportunity to attend special lessons on 3D effects, understand how this technology works and view a 3D projection to understand the differences with a traditional 2D projection.

After the educational part, students participated in a practical Immersive Storytelling Contest in which they were called to put into practice what they had learned: create a character and a story for a 3D project.

“The students loved the contest and found the creative project extremely stimulating. Three projects were selected (from the 30 sent by schools) on the basis of content, technique and style. Moreover, it’s interesting that all projects showed a great interest for social and ethical issues, revealing that our students are aware of the social context in which they live and are capable of reflecting deeply on society,” points out Ana Lain, Self-Enterprise and New Works Coordinator, Fondazione Mondo Digitale.

The three winners are Erika Zito (Liceo scientifico Claudio Cavalleri di Parabiago, Milan), Elena Valentini (Istituto comprensivo Belforte del Chienti, Rome) and the youngest of the three Pasquale Bianco (Istituto tecnico industriale Galileo Ferraris, Naples) who created three original projects addressing current issues.

Dalisa, the character imagined by Erika Zito, is courageous, loyal and determined. She is a “social angel” who lives on social networks to help young men and women use these channels to express their true feelings and problems and not hide behind falsities.

Octavia, the character developed by Elena Valentini, is a young girl with great will power. She lives during the Roman Empire and fights to improve the condition of women.

Louis Gonzales de Riviera (nicknamed “Giggino”) is the funny, honest and idealist character created by Pasquale Bianco, a plice agent of Mexican origin who is responsible for keeping the peace in Scampia, a tough neighbourhood in Naples that is full of “pizza, football, guns and scooters.”

The three winners will see their characters cone to 3D life in the Immersive Lab at the FMD Phyrtual Innovation Gym, a state-of-the-art lab where the most innovative immersive technology are tested. With the help of FMD experts, the students were able to select a range of details for their characters, including movements and peculiarities, to give them the aspect they desired, learning about the creative and multi-disciplinary potential that will become the digital platform of the future. At movies, just as in the lab, 3D technology allows moviemakers to create avant-garde projects that not long ago would have been as unimaginable as the future.

“We are very satisfied about the enthusiasm with which the students participated in the RealD Educational Campaign," declares Alice Tentori, Country Manager Italy for RealD. "They were very good and creative. Our aim is to continue educating youth and make them more aware of new visual technology that can provide both entertainment and knowledge, as well as a professional opportunity for the future.”
