The Language of the Public Administration is Confusing

An interview with linguist Tullio De Mauro on ComunicatoriPubblici.it

The language used by the public administration is careless and confusing says linguist Tullio De Mauro.

"Legislative acts begin with sentences that are two hundred words long. An entire page without any punctuation signs should not exist. They are a linguistic nightmare. It reminds me of how long I worked on correcting a sentence in an act. When I was finished correcting it, it still did not seem to mean anything.” If such an illustrious scholar of linguistics can not understand the language used by the public administration, imagine how an ordinary citizen feels.

The interview with linguist Tullio De Mauro by Maria Costanza Candi appears on ComunicatoriPubblici.it – a portal dedicated to news, events and ideas concerning communication.

Local public administrations are more responsible: "Many administrations, especially local, municipal and provincial administrations, those that are in close contact with people and that need to convey their message have taken hold of this code and strive to respect it”. Consult the data
