Vagone FMD: la sintesi del nono incontro a Binario F

Most enterprises invest a lot of time in the metaverse, an environment that may well represent the economy of the future and of the new generations. In fact, 95% of managers expects a positive business impact within 10 years (Value Creation in the Metaverse, McKinsey&Company). So, the metaverse will open up new roads and scenarios for our personal lives and for the commercial and business development of enterprises.

The nineth meeting of Programme Vagone FMD. From 01 to 100 in the Metaverse, which was held on February 8 at Binario F, focused on economic development and business digitalisation. Here is the review by Onelia Onorati.

WELCOME

Mirta Michilli, Director General, Fondazione Mondo Digitale – these meetings allow us to reflect on the opportunities provided by the metaverse. The Fondazione Mondo Digitale has been working to promote technology for over twenty years, especially to all those who are most at risk of exclusion. We work to impart digital skills to an audience of over 150,000 citizens with widely ranging conditions and opportunities.

Claudia Trivilino, Public Policy Manager Italy and Greece, Meta - Meta believes that the Internet is still a means for visual communication and is therefore set to evolve further. We believe that immersive reality will represent the true evolution of the Internet, as do many of our partners, companies like Luxottica. Today, the true challenges posed by the metaverse are regulatory, social and economic. Above all, we aim to understand what the metaverse is and what it is set to become. Our inspiration remains to increase opportunity whilst decreasing risks.

INTRODUCTORY SESSION

Eleonora Faina, Director General, Anitec-Assinform – we represent enterprises and must act as a go between. We are interested in the metaverse and the opportunities it presents. We must understand not only what investments are required, but also the regulatory field of action. Technological competition represents the new geopolitical frontier. Today, the stand-off is not only of a military nature, but also of a technological one. Grasping the opportunity means imagining less rules and more tools, because innovation is generated by the ability to evolve. One of our worries is how to distribute this technology to the weakest elements in society. Awareness implies not only curiosity, but also competence. These opportunities help us to drive the awareness that technology is a tool that must be regulated.

Clarissa Tacchella, Manager, Infinity Reply – We can identify three macro-areas for the metaverse: social communication experiences, retail experiences, business experiences, in general. Each of these dimensions may have points of contact but can exist separately. There currently is no regulation and we are trying to understand what our needs are to then apply them to business. In our products dedicated to music, for example, we have imagined a concert-like environment including elements of such experience. The right mix of experience and dialogue represents the best expression of the metaverse at present.

BRAINSTORMING SESSION AND CONCLUSIONS

with Elisa Amorelli, Communications, Institutional Relations and Social Marketing Coordinator, Fondazione Mondo Digitale

Luigi Nave, Senator and member of the permanent ninth commission (Industry, commerce, tourism, agriculture and food production) – today, I believe the most interesting area is dedicated to gaming. However, thanks to this experience, I can see that there is a vast potential for business. And I guarantee that whoever wished to express their interest, will be welcome to our permanent commission at the Italian Senate.

Ginevra Leganza, Fondazione Leonardo – the nice design that we experiment with today could be of interest for the improvement of virtual work. Could it help resolve physical security issues?

Mauro Morra, Fondazione Leonardo – Today, during these initial experiences, I have noticed a limitation to free movement. New enabling technology will be necessary.

Marco Casu, Fondazione Leonardo – I wonder if we will manage to keep abreast of this technology and whether it will be inclusive for non-digital natives.

Myriam Caratù, UNINT Researcher (economy and business development) – one very interesting element is the assessment of the consequences of what happens in the metaverse may have on the real world. I refer to both pleasant and unpleasant experiences. What could be done about the psychological repercussions of an act in the metaverse from a physical point of view?

Anna Carla Nazzaro, Professor, Private Law, UNINT – I wonder about repercussions in terms of privacy. The immersive experience is very emotive and involving, but how can we resolve the issue of its interconnection with reality. I believe we need to understand how to interconnect these two separate worlds.

Giovanni Curcio, Cometa – the metaverse can increase productivity. Thin about the virtual space that can be created for those using different paradigms in the metaverse, overcoming spatial limitations such as those of a train seat, for example.

Riccardo Sorbara, Cometa – I see interesting applications for tourism, far more than just promotion and marketing.

Francesca Triucci – we would like to introduce tactile sensors to augmented reality to make it an even more complete experience.

Isabella Cafaro, Capgemini. I proposed the metaverse to our clients, but they are not ready, especially brands with commercial products. On the other hand, companies in the third sector and in assistance could exploit it as a fantastic opportunity for evasion for immobilized patients.

Alberto Racco, economist – There are great implications for individuals with motor disabilities who could enjoy a series of gratifying experiences.

Arturo Caffo, Professor of Economics - the metaverse could act as a lever to create emotional tension and increase emotions related to the physical experience of places. Notwithstanding the many reservations, I believe that this technology should be promoted socially and in schools to generate work, wealth and wellbeing. Italy has various companies that could develop such technology.

Silvio La Torre, Industrial Policy and Sustainability, Confindustria – In particular, two aspects interest me: presence and contact. In fact, I noticed that as compared to videocalls, there is a bodily presence through avatars that provides a stronger involvement and calls for closer attention. Moreover, it can reduce the distance between distant individuals.

Sara Saccone, Johnson Medical – I see many possible applications in the health sector. It is the perfect technology to share opinions amongst experts and increase surgery sessions, for example.

Michele D’Ambrosio, Research & Innovation, Confindustria – I propose that we abandon the stereotypes related to the metaverse and embrace the development of immersive life. It can be applied to a variety of sectors, especially, production and services. The metaverse may be considered not only a business tool, but one for entertainment, too.

Cesare Coppo, Ministry of Enterprise, Cabinet staff – the learning curve is steep and the practical potential vast! I imagine an interconnected world in which we interact with a single identity. We trust in the utility of this tool. The quality is high, but access support must be improved.

Emanuela Percoco, Intesa Sanpaolo – for the group I represent, it is very useful in training. We use it at the Turin Area X to introduce students to the world of insurance. Virtual reality allows us to enjoy a safer environment for application and training of soft skills, for example. We also use it for security.

Oscar Piccolo, ENEL Institutional Relations Coordinator – We believe the metaverse is useful both in terms of training for sectors such as health and security, flight training and crisis situation simulations. Today’s experience leads me to believe that if the metaverse is truly the evolution of the Internet how can we facilitate its use in all types of situations?

Daniela NapolitanoSustainability and Institutional Affairs Italy, ENEL – the applications are infinite and very inclusive for individuals with disabilities. The immersive aspect is very interesting, but we are still behind in terms of avatars, which are still too rudimental, as well as in terms of landscape. I also look forward to the introduction of tactile sensors.

Margareta Cotugno, Associations and Stakeholders Coordinator, ENEL – consumer associations are still wary about the web, so I imagine further issues for this category. The other issue is the access gap for certain population categories.

Francesca Castellani, Legislative and Funding Coordinator, ENEL – I look forward to the metaverse for training. It’s very exciting and extraordinarily intuitive.

Ettore Russo, Anitec-Assinform – many members still have doubts about the use of the metaverse for SMEs. However, we believe that it represents a challenge for competitiveness and wish to prove that SMEs can use this technology, starting with AI, through a few pioneers. This will be possible through case histories.
