Last Saturday, Project “Grandparents on the Internet in the Province of Palermo” held its final event in Castelbuono, where the project was implemented with the support of Fondazione CON IL SUD (see news 7 Hubs for Citizens).

In two years, the project has involved 750 over-sixties in digital literacy courses, enriching the educational opportunities in the town with 7 new Internet hubs for all citizens. IIS Luigi Failla Tedaldi, managed by Headmaster Maria Cicero, served as the main educational hub, while Professors Laura Donato and Giuseppe Fusco coordinated the didactic activities for the two school programmes (college preparatory and agricultural).

Seven Internet hubs were installed at the Youth Centre and at six elderly centres (Anteas, Auser, Ceres, Turterfly, CNA Pensionati and Forbici). The hubs, designed by Vincenzo Pinsino, include a laptop, printer, tablet, smartphone, projector and screen. The Youth Centre is also equipped with a 3D printer and a meeting room. In particular, this first digital manufacturing device represents the beginning of a new challenge: the development of a local fab lab.

In this interview with Cecilia Stajano, who coordinated the project, the Mayor of Castelbuono, Antonio Tuminello, explains the impact of the project.
