Elisa (16) and Edoardo (17) are students at the Istituto professionale Maffeo Pantaleoni in Frascati (Rome) who participated in the hackathon organised by Project IoT at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym with a team compsoed of boys and girls from two classes: 3B and 4B. Together, they designed the “Saving Food” App to prevent food waste. The app alerts users and shop keepers to products that are reaching their “best by” date to promote savings.

"Saving Food" was selected with six other projects: see Seven More Teams.

Here is how the developers describe the app:

Saving Food is an intelligent way of preventing food waste in supermarkets that usually just discount foods that are close to the “best by” date. The app will make it cheaper to buy quality products. The reason? Their “best by” date. Saving Food allows users to easily buy food that is about to pass the “best by” date with a discount on the full price. Our application allows shoppers to view all the products that are discounted at all shops near them and thanks to GPS to see how far the shop is.

The challenge amongst students is part of Project IoT at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym, promoted with Cisco. Tomorrow, April 19, the Cisco Offices in Rome will host the final phase of the challenge with students involved in two hackathons.
