The Telemouse course at ICS "G. B. Valente" in Rome (school year 2009-2010) was a big success. The student tutors and the local elders who attended the course produced a variety of digital products including a news programme and a photo album.
Over the course of 15 two-hour meetings, the students of classes “V E” and “IV D” taught the elders to use a computer, find information and use useful services.
“The seniors living in our neighbourhood and from the surrounding elderly centers were continusoulsy increasing. They all wanted to learn more. Now, we know what it takes to be a good tutor,” the students point out.
Decalogue for the Good Tutor
Being a tutor will help you mature.
- Be (very) patient: grandparents are not used to schooling and are unfamiliar with computers.
- Be kind, polite, especially if an elder makes you mad.
- Grandparents must learn on their own. Don’t do their work for them!
- If you have a doubt, ask the teacher.
- If you get into an argument, call the teacher and explain the problem with accusing anyone.
“The brief journey into the Internet has ended this year, too, but once again, the enthusiasm that animates our old and young students, will bring us back on the same tracks,” add the teachers.
