Coding Girls in Mozambico

A project promoted by Cies and funded by Aics

The Coding Girls cordate is enriched by going beyond national borders to Mozambique with the project Coding Girls – Tackling the Gender and Geographic Divide in the ICT Sector in Mozambique, promoted by the Center for Development Information and Education (Cies) with the involvement of Mozambican institutional partners, National Institute of Electronic Government (Inage) and the Eduardo Mondlane University of Mozambique Information Technology Center (Ciuem), under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Education. The initiative is funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).

Over the course of the project, secondary school and university students from 10 provinces in Mozambique (Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambèzia, Niassa, Nampula, Cabo Delgado) will be the protagonists of a training and awareness-raising program in Steam (basic and advanced level), reinforced-for a group of young women-by pilot experiences in incubation and development of micro and small women-owned businesses.

objectives
  • To spread a more confident attitude toward new technologies among girls and provide concrete opportunities to acquire related skills: from the use of major computer packages to simple programming tools.
  • To improve the capacity of the National Institute of Electronic Government (Inage), and its network in the provinces, to be the hub for the project's training activities, through dedicated coding train-the-trainers for technical staff, the creation of environments (Coding Club) and the provision of appropriate equipment.
  • Support the creation and support, by the CI-UEM innovation space, of at least 20 startup-related businesses, led by women and with products/services mainly in the field of new technologies
numbers

The goal is to involve more than 1,000 female students in ICT training and orientation to Steam studies and about 150 public and private service workers in refresher and training opportunities.

12,000 young people - attending school or university - will benefit from information and awareness-raising actions on training and professionalization opportunities in STEM fields, including through dissemination events and hackathons.
