Tomorrow at the University of Milan, cybersecurity students will be working on the development of the MaiSolo AI prototype
An innovative idea can emerge in just a few hours during a hackathon. But what does it take to turn it into a secure, reliable service that’s ready for people to use? This is the challenge that tomorrow, Tuesday 27 October, from 3 pm to 6 pm, will see third-year students on the Systems and Network Security degree programme at the University of Milan take part in, as part of Roll Cloud. Working in the Cloud, the project promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale in partnership with Google Cloud and Intesa Sanpaolo.
At the heart of the challenge is MaiSolo AI, the prototype devised by Gabriele Crociani, Alessandro Pasetti and Alessia Castagnedi, students at Roma Tre University, winners of the university challenge dedicated to health as part of Hack4SocialAI and awarded a special mention at the RomeCup 2026 [read the news article The future of healthcare is in the hands of young people].
The project stems from a real need: not to leave people alone at the most critical moments, particularly the elderly, those with chronic conditions and vulnerable members of the public. MaiSolo AI envisages a connected care ecosystem that integrates smartwatches, apps for patients and their families, telemedicine and artificial intelligence. The designed features include continuous monitoring of vital signs, predictive analysis of potential deteriorations, voice-based assessment of symptoms, and recognition of stroke warning signs using the F.A.S.T. protocol. The system also includes tools to facilitate communication with doctors and the involvement of family members.
An idea with high social potential that now serves as the starting point for a new challenge: how can such sensitive technology be made sufficiently secure and reliable for use in real life?
Students at the University of Milan, organised into groups, are tasked with analysing the prototype, identifying vulnerabilities, assessing risks and proposing solutions to strengthen its security, applying the principles of Secure by design. The activities cover software, systems and network security, as well as model-driven design, with a focus also on organisational and legal aspects. The protection of health data, the reliability of information and the secure management of emergencies thus become concrete challenges against which to test the skills acquired during their university studies.
Following an initial design thinking session, the groups work on developing their own solutions, which they present to a panel in the afternoon. The challenge concludes with the assessment of the projects and an awards ceremony.
From Rome to Milan, innovation becomes a shared journey: the insight of three young university students has turned into a learning opportunity for other students, who are called upon to tackle real-world problems and take on concrete responsibilities. An example of how ideas and skills can come together and enrich one another through collaboration between universities and different educational pathways.
This is also the value of Roll Cloud: to guide young people from an understanding of technologies to the ability to design reliable and socially responsible solutions. Because when innovation concerns people’s health and safety, trust is an integral part of service quality.
And, as the creators of MaiSolo AI remind us, “Because every minute counts. Because no one should be left alone.”
