Class Collection

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale is collaborating on Project "Class Collection" at the Istituto Piaget-Diaz in Rome (MIBAC Scuola attiva la cultura Call) with a Fab Lab course at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym based on digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping activities with 3D printers and laser cutters.

The objective of the project is to experiment a replicable process of creative regeneration to transform the school into a cultural and social hub open to all citizens. The creation of art works, developed collectively by artists in collaboration with students and residents, will allow the project to transform the school into a contemporary art museum.

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale contributes to an “immersive” educational experience based on creative and artistic recycling of waste material and the discovery of new trades related to digital craftsmanship. The objective is to create four different works, objects or gadgets that will narrate or enrich the “class collection” developed in each school branch (4 in total) to boost the value of the school locally and improve its community outreach.

The four nine-hour labs (three-hour afternoon sessions) will involve four groups of students from the different branches for a total of about 60 students. The first group starts today. Matteo Viscogliosi, Phyrtual Innovation Gym Fab Lab Coordinator and Marco Brocchieri will hold the courses.

Course Modules

  • 1st Meeting: presentation of lab objectives, introduction to concepts of the circular economy, creative recycling. Introduction to fab lab philosophy, tools, laser cutting, 3D printing, materials and design software. Definition of a project and its functions.
  • 2nd Meeting: introduction to IOT (Internet of Things), making an object intelligent. What’s a programming card? What is the potential and syntax of the code? Practical exercises. Project application.
