Italy signs the 2nd additional protocol to the Budapest Convention

After four years of negotiations (Sept. 2017 - May 2021) and the formal approval in November 2021, on May 12, the 2nd Additional Protocol to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime was signed by Italy at the European Council in Strasbourg during the international conference on greater cooperation and sharing of electronic evidence. The objective is “to strengthen cooperation in the fight against cybercrime and consolidate the gathering of evidence for specific investigations or penal procedures.”

The event was held in collaboration with the Italian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the European Council. The event was attended by 250 people from 75 countries, while a further 130 followed the event on-line.

The new protocol was signed on May 12 by ministers, ambassadors and high representatives of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Estonia, Finlandia, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Morocco, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Sweden and the United States.

The partnership of European Project Trust Aware, at the forefront in the prevention of privacy and security threats, expressed particular satisfaction for the result achieved in view of the exponential increase in cybercrime and the lack of a linear and reliable procedure to secure electronic evidence [see post on Twitter].

In Strasbourg, the Italian Justice Minister, Marta Cartabia, and the Secretary General of the European Council, Marija Pejčinović Burić, opened the ceremony for the signature of the Additional Protocol to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, which will strengthen international cooperation and allow the use of electronic evidence.

Through a range of actions, the TRUST aWARE partnership aims to minimise the impact of cybercrime by making users more responsible, promoting collective awareness and encouraging digital products that preserve S&P in conformity with current regulations.
