The third and final act of the local hackathons organised by Project Talent Tour promoted with Invitalia ended yesterday. I3P, the Incubator at the Politecnico di Torino, hosted eight teams addressing the “AI & Robotics for Climate Change” Challenge [see news: Talent Tour in Turin].

After being postponed on account of the health emergency, the Turin hackathon now has a winner: Humic.

First place went to Team “Bio Search Ambiente” with Roberto and Paolo Ricci, whose proposal is based on the environmental requalification of polluted sites. Starting with the biodegradation of organic substances, Humic produces the acid by the same name, as well as natural and complex substances, to use for the requalification of the sites. This is a circular economic process that can substitute traditional requalification means, such as garbage dumps, and recuperate over 12,000 contaminated areas, reducing both costs and environmental impact.

Mattia Arimondo and Stefano Melis of Team “Nova Stark” took second place with Arya, a device that employs artificial intelligence to control the temperatures of wine cellars and pantries to save energy and maintain a constant climate. The device will not only save on electricity costs, but also prevent the loss of foods that deteriorate due to climactic conditions.

Third place for Shark8, the robotic solution proposed by Team “Pipe In” with Marek Murgia, Gabriele Luzzani and Alessandro Minori. The objective is to improve the system for detecting the loss of water in large hydric systems, especially industry. The Shark8 robot moves through pipes and uses pressure, ultrasound and position sensors to collect data that it analyses with an AI algorithm. This system improves the maintenance of hydric systems and lowers operational costs.

We would also like to thank all the other teams that participated - “Groenakkedis”, “Elettra Robotics Lab”, “GeneGIS”, “Elvo Team” and “Greenovation” – that participated in the challenge with great commitment during this difficult health emergency. Francesca Del Duca organized the event for the FMD with the support of Giacomo Palombi.

These three challenges represent an important goal in the process of involving new talent on environmental issues. And it’s the starting point for the development of creative synergies.
