The summer camps at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym kicked off last week. This year, each week focuses on a specific topic [see news: A Summer of Making]. The first group of children, aged 7-12, were involved in the Digital Fashion Week (June 10-14).
“Designer Irene Caretti helped the young stylists to design and laser-cut objects and fashion accessories reflecting their tastes and lifestyles. Cyclists produced their own vests, while sea lovers produced the perfect hat to protect themselves from the sun. Then, they moved on to bracelets, necklaces and belts in a thousand colours,” explains Carlotta Di Filpo, fundraising and social marketing assistant, who helped organize all three of the summer camp weeks.
"With Valentina Gelsomini, they added a codebug, a small programmable accessory that makes objects interactive. Finally, together with Fiammetta Castagnini, they described their week through images and original music for each precious personality,” adds Carlotta.
In parallel with the FMD activities, the children also studied English and enterprise with Silvia Pulino, Professor at the John Cabot University, and her innovative "Kids Up" didactic programme.
"The necessary time for play and creativity were organised by Nicolas and Vito from the Netensia Association, who also enriched the days with music and songs.”
Here is what the children produced:
- Emma (9): white and pink-squared belt with her initials;
- Ginevra (11): a summer blouse in blue, turquoise and pink;
- Giulia (10): a light blue hair band with a big pink flower;
- Sofia and Diana (12): choker necklace, in blue for Sofia and pink for Diana
- Giuseppe and Davide (12): turquoise baseball hats with custom-tailored inserts;
- Tommaso (10): a dark blue baseball hat with his name etched into the visor and his favourite codebug number: 10 for his age;
- Italo (10): a cycling t-shirt that will allow him to be easily spotted along the road (“It’s a dangerous road, you have to make sure they can see you and it also makes me look like a professional cyclist”;
- Gaia (12, Italo’s sister): a summer blouse with multicoloured straps.

Nine children will attend next week. They will work on the green economy and safeguarding the environment. The children will follow the same type of programme. In this case, however, they will develop a kit of pots, which, thanks to codebug, will provide warnings when the plant needs more or less water to avoid waste and help it live longer.
During the last week, 21 children will work on art and technology.
