Volterra students play the role of digital tailors at the senior citizens' centre

The online magazines Castelli Notizie and Ugualmente Abile report on the success of the Nonni su Internet (Grandparents on the Internet) project launched at the Parco della Pace senior citizens' centre in Cava dei Selci (a hamlet of Marino), in collaboration with the Vito Volterra scientific high school in Ciampino (Rome).

The course, aimed at the over-65s, promoted digital autonomy with an approach focused on practical skills: sending messages, video calls, apps, browsing, online safety and recognising cyber risks. Learning takes place through intergenerational exchange: students act as tutors, supporting participants in the activities and stimulating rich and motivating dialogue.

The experience of students and senior citizens

Many students from Volterra enthusiastically joined the programme, not only putting their tech skills to good use, but also developing qualities such as patience, empathy and a spirit of service. The seniors gained confidence in using technology: thanks to the course, they learned to navigate the digital world with greater awareness, developing a new independence and peace of mind, including in their family relationships. The initiative goes beyond technological literacy, contributing to greater security and autonomy in everyday life. ‘The students have always shown themselves capable of dealing with any request,’ says journalist Eleonora Persichetti. ‘An example? This year, a lady managed to sell her car online with the help of one of the students!’

The role of the Volterra High School

The project fits perfectly into the school's educational programme: promoting the overall growth of students by fostering the development of cultural, social and civic skills. The tutors not only teach, but also practise fundamental interpersonal skills. The experience took place in weekly meetings held directly at the senior citizens' centre, involving about forty people.

The Cava dei Selci senior citizens' centre, led by president Umberto Porrino, has over 500 members and is currently evaluating a new 250 m² location with parking and green space to accommodate the high turnout and expand its social and recreational activities.
