Italian Victories

After the news of Rome IIS Galileo Galilei Team Spqr’s new victory at RoboCup 2015 as world champions for the second year in a row [see news: Champions Take Two], we have more good news: the victory of the Sicilian "Papaoutai" Team.

Here is what Prof Domenico Ardito from IIS Archimede in Catania wrote to Francesca Del Duca [Francesca_fmd] who coordinates Robotics for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and organizes the RomeCup:

Dear Francesca,

Here we are after the umpteenth sleepless night. This time is because of surprise and excitement. In fact, the Robocup Cospace Committee communicated in mid July that we could register a team for the iCooL Challenge Competition. This is the on-line version of Cospace Rescue (only the 3D part). As our team placed second in Rome and everyone else already was in China, I asked the kids if they felt up to preparing competition software in just six days. And that’s how we undertook this new crazy adventure with 30 teams from 20 countries. On the evening of July 19, we received the software with the competition pitch and we had to send the algorithm to the competition committee the next morning at 10 am. So, it was another sleepless night, exchanging SMSs and e-mail with students to fine-tune sensors and motors. Just producing an algorithm that would score points, find and gather objects, avoid obstacles and the pitch edge was a victory. Instead, yesterday, this is what was published on the competition website: http://cospacerobot.org/competition/roboxperience

Translated from Chinese, it means that Team Papaoutai won the competition!

Our best wishes to Team Papaoutai and members Giovanni Mirulla, Vincenzo Catalano, Gioele Pidal and Giuseppe Missale!
