Physics School

Giovanni Organtini has made an initial assessment of the Physics School with Arduino and Smartphone held at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym (September 12-14) and sent an e-mail to all participants and promoters: “The assessment is absolutely positive. I am absolutely enthusiastic about how everything worked out. I really didn’t believe we could produce such satisfaction and results.”

The e-mail also includes a short description of the activities that took place at the school for those who were not present:

The school was a success. For those of you who weren’t there: on the first day, we conducted frontal lessons, while on day two the teachers designed and developed their experiments, and then shop at the Chinese shop for all the material they required. On day three, the teachers perfected their experiments and presented them.

In just three days, the teachers learned about Arduino and how to develop experiments to:

  • Study the motion of a falling body on an inclined plane
  • Measure the charge/discharge of a condensator
  • Study the propagation of heat along a bar
  • Observe the achievement of thermal equilibrium over time
  • Experimentally verify Ohm’s Second Law
  • Study non-inertial reference systems
  • Study acceleration on rotating systems
  • Measure the intensity of a magnetic field produced by permanent magnet and a charged wire.

Moreover, applying the laws of physics, they developed:

  • A system to indicate when plants need to be watered
  • A small robot capable of following a dark line on a surface

When I conceived this school, I imagined that we would be able to teach participants to light a LED or measure the temperature. Although some coding required tweaking, I never expected to see such complex experiments! This is really a very encouraging result.

We also began to create a network of contacts amongst different types of expertise that will be useful in the future. And I feel that the participants had fun, notwithstanding the commitment (7 hours a day with a only a short lunch break).

We decided to share Giovanni Organtini’s message and would also like to thank all the participants ourselves for their enthusiasm and passion.

See you soon!
