How to use artificial intelligence methodically and thoughtfully in the medical profession of the future

A fourth-year student on the Master’s degree programme in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Naples Federico II, Emanuele Capuano tells us how the The Future of Care programme has helped strengthen his ability to use artificial intelligence tools for his studies and in preparation for his future career as a doctor.

“Before joining the FMD Academy, I had already gained a basic understanding of artificial intelligence in healthcare, acquired through my studies in statistics and medical informatics and subsequently deepened through a specialist course on Coursera, delivered by Stanford University online. I have always maintained an open and trusting attitude towards innovative digital technologies, combined with the critical thinking essential to the medical profession.

‘The Future of Care’ has consolidated and updated my knowledge of artificial intelligence applied to healthcare, offering me a particularly important opportunity to keep up to date in a sector that is evolving at a rapid pace.

During my studies, I have already begun to use AI-powered educational resources made available by the university to the entire student community.

The fact that I already have many AI-integrated devices leads me to believe that artificial intelligence will be a valuable aid to my future professional practice, facilitating the work of healthcare professionals.

The impact of AI in healthcare is significant both in the clinical setting and in scientific research, particularly in precision medicine and the processing of clinical and genomic data. New tumour biomarkers will be discovered in the coming years, and this will lead to further developments in preventive medicine.

I would recommend that my colleagues enrol in the FMD Academy, and in particular in the ‘Future of Care’ programme, due to the quality of the video courses and the clear, structured layout of the three modules on AI, to gain a better understanding of how to use this powerful and innovative technological tool.

The The Future of Care project is sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft Italia and Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS with the aim of guiding professionals and students towards a more competent, informed and humane healthcare system.
