The RomeCup on TG2

Giorgio Pacifici’s report highlights the work of young inventors, featuring football-playing robots, assistive technologies and marine drones

In the report, RomeCup is described as “the largest innovation event dedicated to young people”, with the participation of schools, universities and research centres at the Sapienza University of Rome. A visual account that captures the variety of the exhibition area and the competitions, where technology becomes an opportunity for learning, career guidance and intergenerational exchange.

Among the projects presented, the report highlights the robot footballers, linked to the international RoboCup challenge, launched with the aim of staging a match by 2050 between humanoid robots and FIFA world champions (Vincenzo Suriani, researcher at Sapienza University of Rome). There is also space for solutions promoting inclusion, such as a system comprising glasses, a cane and a headset to support blind people: the image is sent to a server, which identifies the observed object and communicates it to the user via the headset (Stefano Mantini, Mathematics teacher, Virginia Centurione Bracelli Institute in Rome)

TG2 also reports on an autonomous catamaran-shaped underwater drone, capable of navigating along a waypoint entered on a map thanks to its on-board GPS systems (Alessio Vinci, researcher at Tor Vergata University).

At the heart of the event, as the report highlights, are training, guidance and educational methods for the younger generation. “Today we have over 4,000 students, schools, universities and research centres demonstrating just how much young talent can make a difference in creating quality jobs in our country,” says the director general Mirta Michilli.

With the TG2 report, RomeCup confirms its role as a national platform for bringing out ideas, skills and scientific vocations: a showcase for young inventors demonstrating how robotics, artificial intelligence and digital technologies can become practical tools for improving people’s lives and creating new opportunities.
