School without Conflict

Over 800,000 non-Italian students from 200 different countries attend schools in Italy. Indeed, although 70% of them come from 10 countries, they have very different cultures, spanning from Morocco to Albania [MIUR: Focus sugli alunni con cittadinanza non italiana (in Italian)].

What competences does a teacher require to navigate this cultural diversity? How are incoming students welcomed? And, above all, how can conflicts between cultures be managed?

Thanks to European Project Accord, teachers now have a new tool to improve their competences to efficiently manage intercultural and interethnic conflict and promote action against discrimination and racism. The Accord MOOC is dedicated to teachers and coaches and their fundamental role in the development of future European citizens.

The on-line course on the Moodle Platform is organised into five lessons and the ACCORD role game. The objective is to provide a global, theoretical and practical, activity focusing on intercultural and interethnic conflict at school. The various modules and activities in the game help teaches to increase their awareness and understand competences addressing intercultural literacy, inclusive pedagogic approaches, and constructive conflict management. This allows teachers to actively contribute to the creation of learning environments based on intercultural values and diversity.

The experiential training provided by the game allows each teacher to actively test the conflict dynamics and concepts in simulated scenarios based on real contexts in five European countries.

The course will be presented by Davide Marocco, Professor of Psychometry at the “Federico II” University of Naples and Associate Professor (Reader) in Cognitive Robotics & Intelligence Systems at the University of Plymouth (GB) where he coordinates the Robotics Programme.
