The Sound of the Bridge

One of the most original educational activities at the Phyrtual Innovation Gym for small children are the exciting sound design labs held by sound engineer Fiammetta Castagnini.

Children in year four at the Carlo Pisacane Primary School (Istituto comprensivo Via Ferraironi in Rome) are working in small groups on selecting and editing the sound track for a video that portrays the collapse of the Tacoma Bridge, a historical event that took place in 1940 in  Washington State.

"I like to work on this video," explains Fiammetta Castagnini, "because it is suited to this type of work. Different types of music can completely change the sense of the video. Moreover, it allows me to explain the phenomenon of resonance between the wind and the bridge, as well as in terms of music.”

Besides music, the children work with sounds and noises (wind, electric shocks, impacts, splashes, bells, etc.) and have given the video a title based on the musical genres they employed.

“Borarock” was the choice of three young rockers who love The Clash. Two Eminem fans who like rap called their video “Bridgesound.” And two other children, from Bangladesh, chose a song from their homeland called "Wwh2018," while for the electronic soul of Yassin the best title is “The Murmuring Bridge.”
