Sleeping Concert in Capena

The  Würth Capena Art Forum, which opened on Sunday, September 16, will host a performance entitled “Sparkling Matter” by Artist Matteo Nasini. The event, organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, is part of the "The Many Local Realities" Project promoted by the MANEAT Local Museum System, [see news: la notizia Local Realities].

“Sparkling Matter,” which has already been performed with variations at the New York Marsèlleria, the Galleria Clima in Milan, the National Gallery and MACRO in Rome, and at the Palazzo Fortuny for the Venice Biennale, is based on the cerebral activity of the sleeping artist.

By using an electroencephalograph, Matteo Nasini collects data on his cerebral activity that is transmitted to software that transforms the collected impulses into sounds. The sounds generated by the various areas of the brain will thus produce a composition. Moreover, the shift between different phases of sleep will produce an “instable” composition based on silence and dissonance that mirrors his brain’s activity. Indeed, the composition will be organised by the irrational universe of the artist’s sleeping subconscious.

The artist’s objective is to investigate the stages of conscience, explore sleep and dreams, and transform this scientific research into a sound installation performance that can be viewed and heard. The audience will listen to the sounds produced by the sleeping artist and embark on a three-dimensional journey through lights and sounds generated by cerebral connections and synapses.

On some occasions, the impulses have been transformed into ceramic sculptures via a 3D printing process. Shiny white cones and other jagged shapes that are the materialisation of sleep and the irrational.

“Sparkling Matter” is the result of Nasini investigation into sound, technology and neuroscience, a poetic and inclusive work that is authored by the human unconscious.
