AI in schools: a practical guide to getting started

AI Teach, the free online course for school leaders, teachers and innovation teams

Artificial intelligence has already made its way into schools. Students are using it, teachers are experimenting with it, and school leaders are observing it as they are called upon to make decisions regarding tools, rules, security, accountability and governance. But familiarity with the technologies is not enough: clear guidelines, shared criteria and practical tools are needed to integrate AI safely, effectively and in a way that is consistent with the educational context.

To provide practical support to educational institutions, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale presents AI Teach. A practical guide, practical tools and training for AI in schools, a free online course designed for school leaders, teachers, digital coordinators and innovation teams.

The course has been created to support the ‘AI in Schools’ operational guide, developed by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale to offer schools a practical reference for the informed adoption of artificial intelligence. The guide includes organisational and regulatory guidelines, ready-to-use templates, annexes for governance and teaching, tools for evaluating AI applications, and useful formats for policy, communication and responsible use.

The training consists of four online sessions, dedicated to some of the guide’s operational appendices. The sessions will also be available on demand and, at the end of each session, participants will be able to download a certificate of attendance. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to access the full operational guide.

THE PROGRAMME

23 June, 5.00–6.30 pm
Presentation of the practical guide “AI in Schools”
Organised by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale
The first session introduces the structure of the guide, the operational annexes and the main themes related to the adoption of AI in schools: governance, teaching, regulation, security and responsible use. The Foundation’s support services, the available training courses and the operational contribution of young professionals from the Cybersecurity Seminars will also be presented.

25 June, 5.00–6.30 pm
Ethics and risks of AI
Organised by lecturer Elisabetta Nanni and trainer Elisa Chierchiello
A practical workshop dedicated to risk assessment and the informed selection of AI tools, using Appendix 3. Risk classification of AI systems and Appendix 4. AI tool assessment sheet. The session offers practical support for understanding the limitations, critical issues and responsibilities involved in the educational use of technology, as part of the Experience AI project.

30 June, 5.00–6.30 pm
The correct use of AI by students
Led by teacher Roberto Raspa
The session explores the role of schools in developing awareness, critical thinking and digital citizenship. Through Appendix 6. Student Declaration on the Responsible Use of AI, participants will work on rules, transparency and shared educational responsibility regarding students’ use of AI tools, as part of the Live the Internet to the Fullest project.

2 July, 5–6.30 pm
The Perfect Prompt
Led by lecturer Francesca Sabatini

A practical session dedicated to Annex 9. The Perfect Prompt Manual, with hands-on exercises to learn how to write effective prompts, structure requests useful for teaching, and critically evaluate the outputs generated by AI. The workshop is organised as part of Ital.IA Lab for School, thanks to the contribution of lecturer Francesca Sabatini.

All participants will also have on-demand access to the free video course from Ital.IA Lab for School.

The course is also available on the Sofia platform, with ID 105024.

This training programme also complies with the provisions of Article 4 of the AI Act, which introduces the obligation to promote an adequate level of artificial intelligence literacy for staff using these systems. The relevant supervisory and enforcement rules apply from 3 August 2026.
