Hackathon Winners

A woman is on her first day of work in an ICT company and has to master a few levels before she can meet with her boss. Her colleagues stare at her suspiciously. Another woman replies with her skills and enthusiasm. The aim of the game is to solve the puzzle representing a motherboard.

 

In short, this is the plot of the videogame that allowed Team Barfing Rainbow to win the hackathon that concluded the all-female Coding Girls Week, promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, the American Embassy in Italy and Microsoft to accelerate the pursuit of equal opportunity in the scientific and technological sector (Also see: Coding and Technology and The #CodingGirls are Back). 

 

The winning team includes three sixteen-year-old romans: Eleonora Kleis Di Marco and Giulia Monterrosa study at the Righi School, while Chiara Cavalieri studies at the Croce.

The Awards Ceremony was preceded by a showcase and discussion of the works created by the 22 teams, composed of ca. one hundred young women from Rome and Naples.

 

Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, and US Coach Ashley Gavin proclaimed the winners. The prizes were presented by Gloria F. Berbena, Minister Counselor for Press and Cultural Affairs, United States Embassy.

 

Four Special Mention Awards were also presented:

 

Two teams for  “Best Team Work”:

  • Rockets composed by three students from the Rome Righi School: Camilla Altieri, 16; Marta Tosto, 15; and Lidia Nuzzolo, 15;
  • Digital Girls composed by Francesca D'Amaro, 17, from the Pomezia Via Copernico School; Annalisa Candono, 17, del from the Naples Galileo Ferraris; Martina Coda, 16, from the Rome Croce School and Chiara Ottino, 16, from the Rome Righi School.

 

Two further Special Mentions were awarded to two particularly complex mathematical videogames. One was developed by Team Blackout, which employed trigonometric function, while the other, developed by Motors Girls, employed the force of gravity.

 

Team Blackout: Isabella Ferrara, 15 from the Rome Righi School: Giulia Capitani from the Buonarroti in Frascati, and Giorgia Stefanuiti and Sara Porfirio from the Croce School in Rome.

 

Team Motors Girls: Martina Del Giorno, 16, from the Pomezia Via Copernico School; Eleonora Garzilli, 14, and Francesca Gaudenzi, 16, from the Rome Croce School.
