Teaching the future with robots. Appointment at Sapienza University and at the Rome Campidoglio

The 15th edition of the long-standing event promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale will be held – in presence – on May 2-4 at Sapienza University of Rome. The finals and the awards ceremony will be held at the Rome Campidoglio. Competitions include selections for the teams that will participate in the World Robotics Championship in Bangkok (Thailand) in July: Soccer Open League, Soccer Light Weight, Cospace Rescue. The Italian championship will see competition by 81 teams from 24 schools.

The multi-event dedicated to robotics as the convergence point for a number of innovative technologies, includes competitions, didactic labs, creative contests and hackathons. The showcase area, which will host 32 stands with one hundred prototypes, will be manned by schools, universities, associations, start-ups and companies. Universities will explain to students how courses are changing to aggregate various disciplines and technologies.

During the course of the pandemic, cobots replaced people in various contexts, from disinfecting structures to transporting drugs and food. Now, we return in presence with them to RomeCup to discover who social robots are and what they do.

The 15th edition will open on May 2 at 10 with an orientation day for young men and women on the jobs of the future and trends in technological innovation. Experts will help students learn about human-robot interaction, delve into artificial intelligence, and discover new professions in medicine and biomedical engineering that address the challenge of consilience, the convergence of different disciplines.

What areas of research elicit the greatest interest? How are the job market and universities programmes changing? These questions will be answered by:

  • Antonio Frisoli, Professor of Robotics and Director of the Human-Robot Interaction Area at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa
  • Maurizio Lenzerini, Professor at the “Antonio Ruberti” Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome
  • Eugenio Guglielmelli, Deputy Rector for Research, Rome Campus Bio-Medico
  • Maria Laura Costantino, President of the MedTech School Degree programme, Humanitas University and Milan Polytechnic.

RomeCup will also be inaugurated by Daniele Frongia, Deputy Head of the Cabinet of the Minister for Youth Policy, and Daniele Leodori, Deputy President of the Regione Lazio.

The showcase area – with 32 stands and one hundred prototypes – exhibits Italian robotic excellence. Experts and researchers will meet with young men and women in 11 university orientation talks. In the creative contests, 15 schools will work with 11 universities to develop original robotic solutions in various fields (assistance, agriculture, transports, etc.), while 81 student teams from 24 schools will compete in 8 contest categories, ranging from football to rescue robots, to qualify for the World Robotics Championship in Thailand in July. Moreover, there will also be challenges in the World Robot Olympiad (starting at age 6) and the football games played by Nao robots trained by Sapienza researchers.

The 15th edition of RomeCup has the patronage of the City of Rome and is organised with the support, as partners, of the Regione LazioLazio InnovaSAPEniFondazione Lars Magnus Ericsson; the technical support of Make a Shape; in collaboration with Edu4AI, a project  co-financed by the European Erasmus+ Programme.
