Therapeutic Robots

The Lombardo brothers describe their enterprise - Behaviour Labs – as a love story that began when they were young. “Ever since I can remember, we acted out our cartoon heroes and loved the creators of those mythical robots that fought against evil …” That same enthusiasm led them to create a real fleet of robots that fight one of the evils of society: disease. And they will be at RomeCup2015

with their robots!
Behaviour Labs, an innovative start-up from Catania, was formed in 2012 to “provide a soul” to humanoid robots so that “humans and robots could live together harmoniously providing solutions through edutainment.” The young enterprise promotes research and field experimentation and is rapidly becoming a reference point for Italian Health Robotics, studying diseases such as autism.

The solution devised by Behaviour Labs is based on the implementation of an innovative methodology for human-robot interaction applied to development deficit therapy: a support platform for the improvement of children’s social interactions in the case of relational issues and limited cognitive and verbal interaction. The methodology is based on the use of a multi-touch tablet, dedicated software and a humanoid robot to develop an edutainment system for education and stimulation of social interaction in a variety of contexts. Families and therapists are assisted in understanding the interaction and management of the child in a rich learning environment.
BehaviourLabs currently employs two types of robots:  the French Alderbaran Robotics Nao and the American Robokind Zeno.
In the interview conducted by Francesca Del Duca, Daniele Lombardo explains the company’s decisions over the past two years.
