A Conference for the International Day of the Girl Child

Room to Read, an organisation that is active around the world promoting the empowerment of young women and girls, has organised for October 11 – the International Day of the Girl Child – a conference to discuss gender equality in education and promote the employability of young women.

The Skills for Life event (October 14-15) at the Rome Cavour Congress Centre will involve representatives from the institutions and school, gender and education experts, and organisations working to build bridges between the education of young women and work opportunities as adults.

Speakers, amongst others, include Roberto Ricci, President, Istituto Invalsi; Giuseppe Bagni, President, Centro di Iniziativa Democratica degli Insegnanti; Valeria Fedeli, former Italian Education, University and Research Minister; Linda Laura Sabbadini, Director, Istat; Cristina Scocchia, CEO, Illycaffè; and Susanna Camusso, Senator, Partito Democratico.

Mirta Michilli, Director General of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, will participate on the first day in a round table (11.45-13.00) on "Skills for Life: A Challenge for Schools at Present and in the Future" together with Lidia Cangemi (Rome Liceo scientifico “Kennedy”), Lucina Di Meco (Room to Read) and Salvatore Patera (University of Trento). Moderator: Mila Spicola, teacher and pedagogue, Room to Read Italia.

The objective is to reveal the gender gap that still exists in Italy, the challenges related to the empowerment of young women, their education, professional training and inclusion on the labour market, and to share ideas and good practices to create gender-sensitive educational opportunities that can increase the young women’s success prospects in work and life. The event is an opportunity to share results, data and ideas, as well as to reflect on how to produce improvement.

During the two-day conference, Room to Read, together with partner organisations (Fondazione Mondo Digitale, FEdUF, Consorzio Arca, L’Altra Napoli and Editrice Il Castoro) will present the actions it intends to pursue to contribute to the empowerment of young women, especially in Southern Italy. This is an original pilot project in schools, with a focus on digital and life skills, financial and business skills, and editorial products to promote the educational process.

The event will involve schools (students and professors from schools participating in pilot project I Had an Idea will also be present), associations active in the field of education, and policy makers.
