Coding Girls in Mozambique

A project promoted by CIES and financed by AICS

The Coding Girls alliance expands abroad to Mozambique with Project “Coding Girls – Tackling the Gender and Geographic Divide in the ICT Sector in Mozambique,” promoted by the Development Information and Education Centre (CIES) with the involvement of Mozambiquan institutional partners, the National Electronic Government Institute (INAGE) and the IT Centre at the Eduardo Mondlane University of Mozambique (CIUEM), under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Education. The initiative is financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).

Thanks to the project, secondary school and university students from 10 provinces in Mozambique (Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambèzia, Niassa, Nampula, Cabo Delgado) will participate in an awareness-raising and education programme on STEAM (both basic and advanced levels). Moreover, a group of young women will enjoy a pilot incubation and micro- and small enterprise development experience.

OBJECTIVES
  • Promote greater interest amongst young women in new technology and provide concreate opportunities to acquire skills: from the use of the main software packages to simple programming tools.
  • Improve the ability of the National Electronic Government Institute (INAGE) and its relative provincial network to act as a reference centre for the project through a “train the trainers” programme on coding for the technical staff, the creation of new environments (Coding Club) and the supply of adequate equipment.
  • Drive the creation and support at least 20 businesses related to start-ups headed by women with products and services mainly related to new technology at the CI-UEM Innovation Centre
PROJECT NUMBERS

The objective is to involve over 1000 female students in ICT and STEAM orientation activities and 150 public and private service operators in professional updating and training opportunities.

12,000 young women – in school or at university – will benefit from the information and awareness-raising activities concerning training and professional opportunities in STEM fields, even via dissemination events and hackathons.

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale will participate in this challenge as an expert partner to review and adapt the IT and coding syllabi, on-line trainer training sessions, support the development of Coding Clubs and exchanges with Italian Coding Girls hubs. Moreover, the Fondazione Mondo Digitale will also cooperate in the organisation of role modelling experiences and provide consultancy to micro-enterprise start-ups by young women.
