Computer Kindergarten

Daniel and Loreto, respectively 16 and 80 years old, meet every Tuesday at the Istituto d'istruzione superiore Croce-Aleramo in Rome for Project Grandparents On-line. Everyone’s Young at the Post Office.

“I attend computer kindergarten,” explains Mr Loreto. Daniel, who is his teacher, smiles. And this is what is happening in the 30 schools involved in Project Grandparents On-line: every week elders and students work side by side for two hours in the computer lab. Their habits and pastimes are the mirrors of their generations.

Eighty-year-old Mr Loreto was a train station manager and to this day doesn’t sleep much. “What happens during my day? I go shopping, meet friends to talk about sports and politics and spend a lot of time with my wife, as our children live far away.” He signed up for the Grandparents On-line course because he loves progress. As Dante wrote “you were not born to live as brutes, but to pursue virtue and knowledge.”

Daniel is sixteen and attends the third year of a language programme. Three times a week he does boxing and spends his free afternoons with friends, often playing videogames. He loves studying lanaguages rather than “less useful subjects such as history.”

“History is very important. Trees need their roots,” explains Mr Loreto. “A people without history have no future.”
