How Interland Works

Interland is an on-line game designed to help children learn, through four different experiences, the fundamentals of web security. The game has been created with the help of digital security experts and is suitable for all age groups (especially 6-13). It is free and available at: g.co/interland [see press release and partner declarations].

The following are the four experiences that make up the game, developed as part of Project Fully Enjoy the Internet promoted with Google.

Reality River – Learn to distinguish true from fake.

Interland’s river flows through reality and fiction, but things are not always as they appear. Overcome the falls using your good sense. Watch out for the phishers who will try to mislead you! You will have to correctly answer the question on each platform to successfully cross the river. Learning objectives include:

  • Distinguishing truth from falsehood;
  • Recognising the clues of a fraud;
  • Understanding what phishing is and how to report it.

Treasure TowerSafeguard your personal information.

You can keep all your personal belongings safe in Treasure Tower. Avoid hackers or they will steal your messages and identity. Start by collecting all your messages and e-mails with personal information and safeguard them in the tower. Learning objectives include:

  • Being responsible about your personal information;
  • Creating safe and easy-to-remember passwords.

The Gentle Kingdom – Promote kindness.

Being kind is fantastic! An environment’s atmosphere is always contagious, whether it’s good or bad. Troublemakers are trying to bring negativity to the city’s happiest neighbourhoods. Block and report them to stop their advance and be kind to other users to allow peace to prevail. Reach the peak and spread positive vibrations, blocking negative ones. Learning objectives include:

  • The web amplifies both kindness and negativity. Learn to use the Internet to promote positive messages;
  • Do not tolerate intimidation, speak up!

Mount Responsibility – Use technology with common sense.

The mountainous city of Interland is a place where to meet and speak to residents. However, you have to be very careful about what you share and with whom! Information spreads quickly and there might be a loudmouth amongst those whom you meet. Make sure your posts bounce of mirrors and reach the right users. Learning objectives include:

  • Careful about what you share with whom! Be aware of the consequences of sharing certain kinds of information;
  • Understand that certain information is especially sensitive.
