Success in Naples for the Experience AI training course on ethics and conscious teaching

The in-person training session ‘Understanding artificial intelligence to teach it with awareness’, which took place on 3 December at the Gian Battista Vico high school in Naples, led by headmistress Maria Clotilde Paisio, has come to a successful conclusion. The event is part of the broader Experience AI programme, an initiative promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale ETS as the Italian partner of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and co-developed with Google DeepMind, with funding from Google.org.

The meeting guided around a hundred teachers in discovering the principles and applications of artificial intelligence in schools, exploring crucial issues such as machine learning, ethics and the transparency of AI systems.

Training “Much more human, less artificial”

The primary objective of Experience AI is to strengthen the skills of teachers and students in artificial intelligence and its responsible use in education. Participating teachers (from all levels of education) worked on accountability and teaching and learning processes related to digital learning.

The methodology adopted during the session was very well received. It was described as innovative, interesting and engaging, focusing on the humanisation of AI. The activities involved interaction through cooperative learning and group work, encouraging sharing between different educational institutions. The content was delivered with great clarity, order and usability, making it accessible to both teachers with advanced digital skills and those who were new to the subject.

As one teacher pointed out, the approach to the course was “very unartificial, much more human”.

The importance of awareness: bias and limitations

One of the main focuses of the afternoon training session was on the need to educate students on the conscious use of digital technology, considered the backbone of education in schools. In particular, teachers highlighted that the aspect of greatest interest and usefulness to students was the reflection on bias. It is essential to raise students' awareness of issues such as security, discrimination and the possible hallucinations of AI. The headteacher of Liceo Vico reiterated that, although students are already “very knowledgeable and well-versed” in AI, it is necessary for schools to be aware of all its potential, but above all its risks and limitations. These educational initiatives are considered essential in a context where the acceleration of generative AI makes it crucial to take action to limit the risk of new forms of digital divide, enabling schools to seize technological opportunities with a critical and informed approach.

Objectives and prospects

The Experience AI programme runs from September 2025 to December 2026, with the ambitious goal of reaching 140,000 students (with a focus on disadvantaged contexts) and 7,000 teachers. The Neapolitan experience has confirmed the need for continuous and ongoing teacher training, which is essential for promoting awareness in the classroom, including among learners. Experience AI offers free training courses for teachers of all levels, including synchronous online training, in-depth webinars and local events.
