On the one hand the students, the digital natives, who are immersed in the new digital economy; on the other, the over-sixties, wise elders who know little about new technology. What happens when youth and elders unite to find innovative solutions to local problems? The answer has been provided by Active Ageing and Solidarity Amongst Generations through Learning and Social Innovation,” the two-year project promoted by the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity Amongst Generations (Italian Government /Family Policy) and promoted by the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, which has involved over 30 high schools and various elder centres from six regions in southern Italy.

Next Wednesday (June 8, 11:30 am), at the Liceo Classico G. Meli in Palermo, students, teachers and elders will present the results of the project underway for two and a half years. While the students have taught the elders to surf the web and use social networks, the elders have shared their experiences and knowledge to help the students develop innovative projects.

This virtuous relationship has given rise to 20 experimental, local, social innovation actions ranging from a digital printing shop run by disabled students, conceived by students and elders in Biancavilla, to a dynamic museum that will infuse new life into old objects of daily life and work, developed by an intergenerational team in the Municipality of Randazzo.

Each project has given rise to a true community of innovators, who, day after day, learn to develop new ideas and use them to improve their community. Thanks an initial 600-euro contribution, the students and elders were able to start a crowdfunding campaign on phyrtual.org, involving more actors in their project and opening up to new successful co-projecting experiences. The most innovative projects will receive awards during the final event in Palermo.
