School After School

A few weeks ago they were hosted by the TGR Campania news desk to describe how IIS Galileo Ferraris interprets its role as a school in the problematic area of Scampia, north of Naples, that “hosts very different realities and cultural, social, economic, family, ethnic and religious backgrounds.” The photo shows the student delegation in the Rai TV studios.

"This diversity was welcomed by the school community that transformed it into one of the strong points of the school’s curricula, which, besides the classic technical knowledge required by a world in constant evolution, also requires the ability to welcome that which is different from us, not only to express tolerance, but especially as a source of enrichment, sharing and cooperation.” This is what is written in the school Academic Curricula. "It’s not easy, but this spirit is promoted by teachers, collaborators, administrators and parents, year after year. And it’s complicated by the precocious evolution of our students, their changes and the actual challenges of an economic crisis that hits school especially hard. Nonetheless, our goal, which is pursued with the commitment and energy of the entire school community, is to educate citizens who are aware of facing the future and its issues with honesty, awareness and coherence.”

“It was a fantastic experience,” confesses Prof. Carmine Nasti, who also talked about the “consolidated collaboration” underway with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and about Robotics.

“Now, they are about to finish the mural in memory of Kobe Bryant at the Montedonzelli Metro Station Park,” Carmine writes in a chat with Francesca Del Duca [@Francesca_fmd], Large Events Coordinator for the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. "A young American called Nick helped them out and funded the project in the abandoned park. He has become the students’ idol and interested them in social participation to fix up the park and dedicated it to Kobe. It will be inaugurated on Sunday with basketball tournaments in memory of Kobe. Finally, some good news ..."

The mural was painted by Jorit Ciro Cerullo, known as Jorit, who is especially active around Naples. He also painted the portrait of Pasolini that you can see in the School Changing the World video by Francesco Faralli.

We like this school that is an active part of the community and wants to transform it, because as Tullio De Mauro always said, schools can change the country.
