Health Hackathon Winners

The first appointment of the “Digital for the 3@rd Age. Engagement of Young Elders” was held yesterday in Perugia: a Health Hackathon with nine teams composed of second degree secondary schools in Perugia, students from the Faculty of Medicine, over-65s, programmers and representatives of local organisations and associations.

The teams addressed three challenges: on-line reservations, first aid, GPS-based emergency systems.

The works were presented with an elevator pitch and were evaluated by a jury composed by:

  • Ambra Ciarapica
  • Ornella Ciani
  • Mohamed Fadiga
  • Lorena Grassi
  • Marco Seracini
  • Enrico Tombesi
  • Altheo Valentini
  • Gianluca Vinti

The first prize went to Team “Make New Ideas” with Project “Rescue on Board,” a smart wheelchair with a GPS/GSN device, a weight sensor, an accelerometer and acoustic signals, which was conceived to help individuals with bone marrow damage and elders with motor problems.

Team members: Pietro, Francesco, Giulio, Daniele, Filippo, Beatrice, Maria Teresa, Rita.

The second prize was awarded to Team “Pronti in soccorso” with Project “Safelet,” a bracelet that saves lives. The bracelet was designed to help elders who live alone and individuals with cardiovascular problems, as well as all first aid workers. The device is connected to an app that transmits the patient’s vital parameters and stores one’s clinical history. Moreover, it also has an emergency call system with automatic geo-localisation.

Team members: Lorenzo, Maria, Edoardo, Alice, Sara, Francesca, Luigi, Paolo, Bianca.

Third place was assigned to Team “Lupi nel deserto” with Project “Virgil,” a true domotic hospital. Thanks to a series of interactive totems with NFC readers installed at the Perugia Hospital, patients can easily find out where to report for a medical check-up or a blood exam. The system eliminates the need for queues to check in. Patient appointments are recognised via a QR code and the destination is transmitted via an app or a bracelet (that must be returned when leaving the hospital). The devices, which come with acoustic and luminous sensors, emit vibrations if patients stray from the right route and also allow the patients to request for help by sharing their position.

Team members: Asia, Harold, Elena, Riccardo, Tommaso.

Interconnessioni is a strategic action, promoted by the Regione Umbria and the Umbrian Public Administration School, in collaboration with the Fondazione Mondo Digitale. The project will drive local institutions to face the challenge of rewriting the programme of the Digital Agenda.
